Regional Academy on Mathematics and Science Education: Noticing and Number Talks

The Idaho Regional Mathematics Centers at Idaho State University is excited to invite you to the Regional Academy on Mathematics and Science Education: Noticing and Number Talks.
Join us in learning about noticing students’ mathematical thinking (K12) and scientific thinking (K5). Keynote speaker Dr. Brad Findell will discuss the importance and methods for noticing students’ thinking and making decisions accordingly.
Additionally, in grade band breakout sessions (K2; 35; 68; 912), teachers and administrators will have the opportunity to engage in discourse about number talks and how to ask questions that will elicit students’ understanding. There will be an administratorspecific afternoon breakout.

Teaching Mathematical Thinking courses ensure teachers are given the opportunity to stay current in mathematical education and research for their classrooms. There is a mandatory, variable fee associated with the TMT course. It provides course materials and three (3) Continuing Education credits.

Statewide Summer Academy on Mathematics Education

Come and learn from some of Idaho's most effective teachers of mathematics as they share practices and ideas they have used to promote students' understanding and Idaho's Core Standards. Presentations from classroom teachers and regional mathematics specialists will be focused on specific grade level content and pedagogy (K5, 68, and 912) in this two day professional development opportunity. Learn new ideas, network with fellow teachers, and hear nationally recognized mathematics educator, Phil Daro speak about practices in action. Wavelength, Inc., will return by popular demand to present a program called "Leaders Who Laugh, Last" on Wednesday, July 30.
Orchestrating Productive Teaching: Statewide Regional Mathematics Academies

The Idaho State Department of Education is partnering with institutions of higher education across the state to host three Statewide Regional Mathematics Academies this year. These free, twoday conferences will focus on professional development in mathematics for K12 teachers. The emphasis will be on orchestrating productive teaching. Dr. Brad Findell from The Ohio State University, who helped develop the Common Core State Standards that Idaho chose to adopt in 2011, will be a featured keynote speaker.

Spring Common Core State Standards Workshops

The goal of the Spring 2013 Common Core Math Workshops is to provide teachers and instructional coaches targeted assistance in their transition to the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM). The trainings will be conducted through the instructional framework provided in the MTI course focusing on Building Students' Mathematical Understanding. The GradeBand Content Workshops will provide teachers and instructional coaches with assistance in examining both the content and practice standards in the Common Core with a focus on important mathematics structural components, student thinking, and learning progressions.

Common Core State Standards and the Road to College and Career Readiness
What needs to happen to affect schoolwide change? Dr. Mel Riddile will assist principals and their leadership teams in answering that question and more as he leads principals in transitioning to the Common Core State Standards.
Mel Riddile is the Associate Director for High School Services. He is the former Principal of J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Virginia and T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Riddile was the 2006 Met Life/NASSP National High School Principal of the Year and the 2005 Virginia High School Principal of the Year. His work as a high school principal in diverse, high poverty high schools has earned him both national and international recognition.
High School Mathematics and Implementation of the Common Core State Standards

How will it look and where to begin? Dr. Bradford Findell will assist high school mathematics teachers with practical steps in making the shift to the Common Core State Standards.
Bradford Findell, PhD, was a member of the Mathematics Work Team for the Common Core State Standards and is Past President of the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics. He has taught mathematics courses and lessons in elementary through graduate school, focusing mostly on high school and undergraduate mathematics and on the preparation and professional development of teachers.
