Magnet schools are operated by the local school district. They are overseen by the local board and do not have a separate governance board. They are not required to have an approved charter or operating document.

If your child has a specific interest or aptitude in the focus area of the school it might be a good fit for the child. The instruction method used at the magnet school may be a better fit for your child.

Each district or school will have applications for the magnet school. There may be a limit to the number of students that can attend the magnet school. In that case the school or district will use a lottery to determine enrollment.

Magnet schools are public schools. There is no charge for attending.

Magnet high schools are required to be accredited, which allows credits earned at that school to be transferred to another school without any problems. Accreditation for elementary schools is optional.
