Grade 5

Personal narrative writing tells a story based on a real experience. A personal narrative will have a beginning, middle, and end.

Sample Prompts

Think about a time that you alone or along with friends or family were able to do something that gave you a feeling of satisfaction, pleasure, or a sense of accomplishment.Where were you?What did you do?When did this happen, and who was involved? Think about how you felt about what you did? Write a story for your teacher in which you tell about what happened, and how you felt about it. Include events that led to your experience as well as what happened afterwards. Make your story come alive by using interesting words and details. Share enough information for your teacher to help him/her feel your satisfaction, pleasure, and/or sense of accomplishment. (2002-2003)

Think back to when you had an experience with water. Remember where you were, and when it happened. Who was involved, what happened, and how did you feel about it? Write a story for your teacher about an experience that you had with water. (2001-2002)

Think back to when you had an unexpected experience and remember where you were and what happened. Were you alone or with someone else? When did this happen? What were your thoughts at the time, and what was said? How did you feel? Write a narrative story for your teacher about an unexpected experience that you have had. (2000-2001)

Think about one memorable experience that you had on the way to school, at school, or on the way home from school. Write a story for your teacher that tells all about your experience that you will probably never forget. (1999-2000)

Write a story for your teacher about a weekend that you remember. Tell about what happened and why it was a special, different, or unusual weekend. (1998-1999)

Think about a memorable "first" experience that you remember will. It might be your first pet, first disappointment, first achievement, the first time you felt really sad or really happy, your first "A" or "F", your first recital or game, or your first solo ride on a bicycle, a skateboard, or roller blades. Write a story for your teacher about a memorable "first" experience. (1997-1998)

Write about an animal that is special to you. The animal might be real or make-believe, like a puppet or a cartoon character. Describe how the animal looks, what it does, and why you like the animal. Try to make your reader understand why this animal is so special. (1995-1996)
