Average Scale Score

• In 2005, Idaho fourth graders had a reading average scale score (222) that was higher than the nation (217).
• In 2005, Idaho eighth graders had a reading average scale score (264) that was higher than the nation (260).
• In 2005, Idaho fourth and eighth graders both scored higher than the nation on all reading strands (reading for literary experience, reading for information, and reading to perform a task).

Percent At or Above Basic

(Grade Level Performance ≈ NAEP Basic ≈ ISAT proficient)

• In 2005, 69 percent of Idaho fourth graders scored at or above Basic in reading, which was higher than their national peers (62 percent).
• In 2005, 76 percent of Idaho eighth graders scored at or above Basic in reading, which was higher than their national peers (71 percent).

Noteworthy Achievement of Idaho Fourth Graders

 

Idaho was one of three states where the percentage of students "At or Above Basic" on the Grade 4 reading assessment was significantly higher in 2005 than in 2003.  No state enjoyed a significant increase in the percentage of students "At or Above Basic" on the Grade 8 reading assessment from 2003 to 2005.  NAEP's Basic is comparable to ISAT's proficient that is used to report AYP.
