Idaho Reading Fact Sheets
Context: Parent Education and Reading Performance
The NAEP reading assessment for the eighth grade used
multiple-choice and constructed-response items to examine
student knowledge and skills when reading grade-appropriate
literary and informational texts. Scores range from zero
(0) to 500, where 243 is Basic (i.e., meets grade-level
expectations), 281 is Proficient, and 323 is Advanced.
NAEP reports outs results organized around a variety of
contextual variables. These results do
NOT demonstrate cause and effect between the variable and
student achievement. They do, however, provide a
context for understanding the results. Among the variables
at the eighth grade is the "level of parent education", as
illustrated below.
The average scale score is shown for each level of parent
education. On the NAEP 2009 reading assessment, the average
scores for all four of the eighth grade subgroups defined by
"level of parent education" fell in the Basic performance
category (i.e., the scores indicated that all four groups,
on average, performed at grade-level on the 2009 reading
test).
