Dr. Seuss Reading Night/ Dr. Seuss Reading Carnival/ Dr. Seuss Birthday

This event is a school-wide event.

Event Description:
There are many different ways to do this event, here are some examples.

  • Example 1: Dr. Seuss Family Literacy Night- This event was done with k-3 graders and their families. In the middle of the gym have a table with Dr. Seuss books on it for a reading station. (Have the computers available for children to test after reading books) On the outside walls have tables with other stations. Each station will have a theme with a certain Dr. Seuss book.
  • The Foot Book- Feet cookies for everyone to frost and decorate
  • Horton Hatches an Egg- Egg carton critters to make and decorate
  • Sam I Am- Green Eggs & Ham for everyone to enjoy.
  • I'm not Getting out of Bed Today-A drink made out of Strawberry Kool-Aid and sprite
  • Dr. Seuss Trivia- Station had clickers that had Dr. Seuss trivia questions and a contest with answering the questions

Divide families into groups so they can rotate to different stations. If possible have prizes and books available to give away for drawings throughout the night.

To get the children excited for the literacy event, the week before the event have dress up days to get the children excited. Examples could be, Crazy Hat Day, Crazy Sock Day, Crazy Colored Clothes Day, Wocket in Your Pocket Day (were pockets). Teachers also can incorporate Dr. Seuss activities in their lesson plans throughout the week. (dot-to-dot, word searches, rhyming words, reading Dr. Seuss books to students)

  • Example 2: Have a reading carnival where students can participate in reading activities at each booth. After completing each reading activity students earn a stamp on a stamp card. Once there stamp was full they were able to fish for a prize. Each student has a chance to earn a book from the Dr. Seuss book walk. Families can enjoy reading activities as well as a simple meal like hot dogs and a drink.
  • Example 3: Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration- Have a guest reader from the community read a book to the children. After the guest reader have different stations. Station 1: Watch a video about the Sneetches or any other Dr. Seuss related video. Station 2: Have blank door knob hangers for the students to create their own personalized hanger, drawing or coloring their favorite Dr. Seuss character on the hanger. Station 3: Write a story about what would happen at their house if the Cat in the Hat came to visit while their parents were away. Station 5: Computer lab to test on the book that was read to them. Station 4: Eat birthday cake and ice cream for the party!
