Science
The resources on this page are intended to support implementation of Idaho’s Science Standards approved in 2022. These standards ask students to think and act like scientists by engaging in the heart of science – INQUIRY. This paradigm shift requires students to demonstrate command of knowledge of scientific principles, processes, and content by performing as scientists do.

STEM Diploma
Idaho Statue defines STEM as science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Each local education agency may determine the format of the STEM diploma in recognition of a student’s completion of courses or educational pathway in STEM. A STEM diploma encourages students
to dive deep into STEM programs and prepares them for future careers in STEM fields. It shows evidence of rigorous academic course load and will be attractive to future employers and college admissions offices.
Student Eligibility
According to 33-523 a STEM Diploma can be awarded to every student who meets the requirements of graduation established by the school and meets the following credit requirements:
- Eight (8) credits in mathematics;
- Eight (8) credits in science; and
- In addition to the credits listed in (a) and (b) above, five (5) credits in the student’s choice of any or all subjects of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. This section does not require a student to complete more than the total credits required to graduate as determined by the state board of education.
* A student who has completed eight (8) or more credits in mathematics that include algebra II or a higher-level mathematics class before the student’s senior year is not required to take a mathematics class in the student’s senior year.

Lab Safety
Idaho schools are treated similar to businesses and must follow the same hazardous waste requirements. Like businesses, schools must determine their hazardous waste generator category by counting monthly hazardous waste generation.
