Idaho Core Coaches ELA/Literacy

Over the past two years, the State Department of Education has commissioned teachers from every region to serve as full-time Idaho Core Coaches focused on the English Language Arts and Literacy standards. The Core Coaches are experienced professional development facilitators in the areas of literacy and the Idaho Core Standards, the Common Core, and seek to foster greater collaboration and expertise in the Idaho Core among teacher-leaders and administrators across each geographic area, building a common language around learning through an Idaho Core lens. The program is predicated on honoring teachers as professionals and leaders and the time it takes to affect change in an endeavor as complex as teaching and learning.

Idaho Core Region I Coach:
Kate Keinert, M. Ed.
Sandpoint, ID
Kate KeinertKate Keinert began teaching multiple subjects in 2005 including secondary ELA, French, health, and film studies in Priest River and Sandpoint schools before working as an instructional coach for the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Kate holds a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Idaho and is a fellow of Northwest Inland Writing Project. Her passion is in creating confident teacher-leaders fulfilled In their work with students and colleagues.
Idaho Core Region II Coach:
April Niemela, M.Ed.

April NiemelaApril J. Niemela has taught 7-12 ELA in Idaho since 1999. Her professional background includes past co-director for the Northwest Inland Writing Project (NIWP), and current member of the Secondary Steering Committee for the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE), 21st Century Master Teacher (SDE), U. S. Department of State’s Teachers for Global Classrooms, and Idaho’s EQuIP team. She has facilitated professional development workshops in the area of literacy for teachers across Regions I and II, at multiple national conferences, and in Taiwan and Kazakhstan. Her passion in education focuses on honoring the expertise of teacher-leaders in synergistic ways that deeply impact student achievement.
Idaho Core Regions I and II:
Jill Diamond, M.Ed., N.B.C.T.

Jill DiamondJill Diamond enjoyed eight years as a teacher in the
Moscow School District, looping between 5th and 6th grade. She also served as the ELA Curriculum Resource Teacher in the Lewiston School District. She received her Mater’s Degree om Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado. She was selected as a 21st Century Master Teacher and is a National Board Certified Teacher specializing as a middle childhood specialist. She has served as an EQUIP Rubric Panel member. Jill is building her leadership capacity by working toward her Ed. Specialist degree in the Educational Leadership program at the University of Idaho. She loves facilitation connections between Teacher Leaders throughout Region I and Region II. 
Idaho Core Region III Coach:
Chris Butts , M.Ed.

Chris ButtsChris Butts began working in the field of education in 2003 as a paraprofessional for English Language Learners in the Boise School District. Afterward, he taught eight years in the Nampa School District as an elementary classroom teacher. He holds a Masters Degree in Bilingual Education from Boise State University. Chris has experience providing professional development on the new Idaho Standards and inquiry-based learning across the Treasure Valley as a Teacher Consultant with the Boise State Writing Project. He also works with the National Writing Project on creating Online Learning Experiences (OLE) for educators. He looks forward to encouraging connections among teacher-leaders across the state.
Idaho Core Region III Coach:
Jackie Miller , M.Ed.

Jackie MillerJackie Miller graduated from Northwest Nazarene University in 2008 and has been teaching elementary school in Nampa ever since. In 2012 she received her Master’s Degree in literacy from Boise State University. Jackie became involved with the Boise State Writing Project in 2012 and worked as teacher consultant, providing professional development on the new Idaho Standards at the school, district, and state level. She has been involved with the state’s online courses and initiatives on the narrative, informational, and argument text types and has done cross curricular work with inquiry and the Idaho Core, particularly in math and science. Jackie is excited to empower teachers and leaders across the state by helping them embrace best practices in education to achieve their goals.
Idaho Core Region III Coach:
Brandon Bolyard

Brandon BolyardBrandon Bolyard began teaching English in 2000 at Twin Falls High School and moved to Vallivue High School in 2009. During this time he taught journalism, regular and honors English classes in grades 9-12, Advanced placement language and Composition, and Advanced placement Literature and Composition. He also served as English department chair at both schools where he facilitated team meetings, vertical teaming, and curriculum and assessment development. As a member of the executive board for the Idaho Council of Teachers of English, he participates in providing professional development on best practices and the new Idaho Standards for Southern Idaho language arts teachers. Brandon is also a 2009 Boise State Writing Project fellow.
Idaho Core Region IV Coach:

Paula TillquistPaula Tillquist, a Colorado State University graduate, was a classroom teacher for 26 years. She taught at the elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels. Her most recent focus was in the high school language arts classroom. Over the years, she has taught math, biology, mass communications, web design, reading, and speech. While with the Jerome School District, she was a department chair, new teacher mentor, senior co-teacher, and she taught on the Idaho Education Network (IEN). She was a varsity tennis coach for 10 years. Paula relies on her diverse background as she works with Region IV educators.
Idaho Core Region V Coach:
Ann Christensen
Pocatello, ID
Ann Christensen Ann Christensen began teaching in 1996, most recently at Pocatello High School. She has taught all high school grades and levels from remedial to AP Language. Her experience also includes teaching at Pocatello Women’s Correctional Center and work in residential addiction facilities for teenagers. Ann has been involved with new Idaho Standards since 2011, attending professional development such as Best Practices and Argument and Narrative Writing in the Classroom, as well as work in the area of curriculum development. She draws upon this rich experience and knowledge to craft and facilitate professional development for Region V teachers.
Idaho Core Region VI Coach:
Merri Ann Drake
Blackfoot, ID
Merri-Ann-DrakeMerri Ann Drake, a native of Teton Valley, graduated from Idaho State University in 2003 after which she taught English Second Language (ESL), English, and Spanish in the Blackfoot School District for ten years. While teaching, she also assisted other teachers as a Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Coach and served at-risk youth. Merri Ann has served in the community by teaching adult ESL and adult literacy in Spanish. She is a Fellow of the Boise State Writing Project and is President of the Idaho Association of Bilingual Educators. Merri Ann has served as an EQuIP Rubric Panel member, and is also working with the 15 state K-12 OER Collaborative.
