Idaho Core Coaches ELA/Literacy

Over the past two years, the State Department of Education has commissioned teachers from every region to serve as full-time Idaho Core Coaches focused on the English Language Arts and Literacy standards. The Core Coaches are experienced professional development facilitators in the areas of literacy and the Idaho Core Standards, the Common Core, and seek to foster greater collaboration and expertise in the Idaho Core among teacher-leaders and administrators across each geographic area, building a common language around learning through an Idaho Core lens. The program is predicated on honoring teachers as professionals and leaders and the time it takes to affect change in an endeavor as complex as teaching and learning.

Idaho Core Region I Coach:
Barbara Crumb
Sandpoint, ID
Barbara Crumb Barbara Crumb graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1991 and has been teaching high school English at Sandpoint High School ever since. Part of her teaching experience has included serving as the English Department Chair and as a Site Technology Coordinator. ​She attended the Summer Institute through the Northwest Inland Writing Project in 2006 and has been since been involved with the Leadership Team, co-facilitating workshops and co-facilitating the Summer Institute. Barbara has been an Idaho Core Coach for Region 1 since 2013.
Idaho Core Region II Coach:
April Niemela, M.Ed.

April Niemela April J. Niemela has taught 7-12 ELA in Idaho since 1999. Her professional background includes membership in the Northwest Inland Writing Project (NIWP), National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE), 21st Century Master Teacher Program, U. S. Department of State's Teachers for Global Classrooms, and Idaho's EQuIP team.  She has facilitated professional development workshops in the area of literacy for teachers across Regions I and II, at multiple national conferences, and in Taiwan and Kazakhstan. Her passion in education focuses on honoring the expertise of teacher-leaders in synergistic ways in order to deeply impact student achievement.
Idaho Core Regions I and II:
Jill Diamond, M.Ed., N.B.C.T.

Jill DiamondJill Diamond enjoyed eight years as a teacher in the Moscow SD, looping between 5th and 6th grade. She served as the Curriculum Resource Teacher for ELA in the Lewiston SD. She received her Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the Univ. of Colorado. She was selected as a 21st Century Master Teacher and is a National Board Certified Teacher, specializing as a middle childhood specialist. Currently, she reviews instructional materials for the National EQuIP Peer Review Team. As the co-director of the Northwest Inland Writing Project, Jill facilitates the NIWP Summer Institute and a variety of PD for teachers on a wide range of Idaho Core Standards (CCSS) and literacy topics.  
Idaho Core Region III Coach:
Rachel Bear MA in TELA
Boise, ID
Rachel-Bear Rachel Bear taught high school English for eight years at schools in Nampa and Boise. Her teaching experience includes 9th-12th grade Language Arts, including Sheltered ELL and Advanced Placement. Her work with the Idaho Core (CCSS) began in 2010 when she was invited to work on a grant with the National Writing Project focused on writing units aligned to the Common Core. Shortly after, she became the Common Core Implementation Team Leader for the Boise State Writing Project (BSWP). She has also done work with the Smarter Balanced Consortium and the i3 grant through the National Writing Project which focuses on improving the teaching of writing in high needs, rural schools.
Idaho Core Region III Coach:
Chris Butts , M.Ed.

Chris ButtsChris Butts began working in the field of education in 2003 as a paraprofessional for English Language Learners in the Boise School District.  Afterword, he taught eight years in the Nampa School District as an elementary classroom teacher. He holds a Masters Degree in Bilingual Education from Boise State University. Chris has experience providing professional development on the Idaho Core Standards (CCSS) and inquiry-based learning across the Treasure Valley as a Teacher Consultant with the Boise State Writing Project.   He also works with the National Writing Project on creating Online Learning Experiences (OLE) for educators. He looks forward to encouraging connections among teacher-leaders across the state.
Idaho Core Region III Coach:
Cecilia Pattee, MA in TELA

Cecilia PatteeCecilia Pattee is a graduate from BSU where she received her BA in Bilingual Elementary Education/ESL in 2003 and received MA in Teaching English Language Arts in 2012. She taught for 6 years in the Nampa School District, teaching middle school Bilingual Social Studies and Science, high school ESL, and elementary students through the district's Migrant Summer School Program. Most recently she taught adult ESL at CWI and for international students at The C of I. Cecilia became involved with the Boise State Writing Project in 2009 and worked as a teacher consultant, providing professional development, a variety of in-services, workshops, and developing material with an emphasis on ESL, inquiry, and the Idaho Core Standards (CCSS).
Idaho Core Region IV Coach:

Paula Tillquist Paula Tillquist, a Colorado State University graduate, was a classroom teacher for 26 years. She has taught at the elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels. Her most recent focus has been in the high school language arts classroom. Over the years, however, she has also taught math, biology, mass communications, web design, and speech. While with the Jerome School District, she was a department chair, new teacher mentor, and senior co-teacher, and she also taught on the IEN network. She also coached varsity tennis for 10 years. Paula relies on her diverse background as she works with Region IV educators. ​
Idaho Core Region V Coach:
Ann Stevenson
Pocatello, ID
Ann StevensonMost recently teaching at Pocatello High School, Ann began teaching in 1996. She has taught all high school grades and levels from remedial to AP Language. Her teaching experience also includes teaching at Pocatello Women's Correctional Center and work in residential addiction facilities for teenagers. Ann has been involved in the Idaho Core (CCSS) since 2011, attending professional development such as Best Practices and Argument and Narrative Writing in the Classroom, as well as work in the area of curriculum development. She draws upon this rich experience and knowledge to craft and facilitate professional development for Region V teachers.
Idaho Core Region VI Coach:
Merri Ann Drake
Blackfoot, ID
Merri-Ann-Drake Merri Ann Drake was born and raised in Teton Valley, Idaho. She graduated from I.S.U. with degrees in Spanish Literature and Secondary Education. She taught in the Blackfoot School District for ten years. While teaching, she also assisted other teachers as a SIOP Coach, led in the Idaho Migrant Student Leadership Institute, and served at-risk youth in an after school program. Merri Ann is a teacher consultant with the Boise State Writing Project and was recently elected President of the Idaho Association of Bilingual Educators.
