Charter School Authorizers
Charter schools in Idaho are authorized by the local school board or by the Idaho
Public Charter School Commission. Quality charter schools depend on quality authorizers. Authorizers are charged by
state law to approve and oversee the performance of charter schools. Among their
important responsibilities, charter school authorizers:
- Determine whether an application to start and operate a charter school merits approval
- Negotiate a contract with an approved charter school that defines the specific operating
terms and performance expectations for which the charter school will be held accountable
- Conduct ongoing oversight of charter schools to evaluate performance, monitor compliance
and enforce contract terms
- Encourage the creation of new quality public school options.
The State Department of Education provides direct assistance to charter school authorizers.
