Archived Professional Development for Idaho Core Standards Now Available

Since the state chose to adopt the Common Core State Standards as Idaho's Core Standards in mathematics and English language arts in 2011, the Department has been working to provide professional development opportunities to teachers and school administrators across the state.

Many of these have been opportunities for teacher leaders and school administrators to take back and share with their districts and buildings. To make it easier for you to use at the local level, the Department has worked to archive some of our professional development opportunities online so you can use them in your school or district.

Here are two examples:

Implications for Instruction Webinars

The Smarter Balanced Consortium's Theory of Action calls for full integration of the learning and assessment systems, leading to more informed decision-making, higher-quality instruction, and ultimately an increase in the number of students who graduate from Idaho high schools prepared for postsecondary education and the workforce.

The Department's Assessment Team hosted a two-part webinar series titled, "Connecting the Idaho Core Standards and the Smarter Balanced Content Specifications for Mathematics: Implications for Instruction," to focus specifically on connecting the Idaho Core Standards for Mathematics and the Smarter Balanced Assessment, which will replace the ISAT in Spring 2015.

Part I focuses on the Mathematics Content Specifications for the Smarter Balanced Assessment, how the Standards align to the assessment targets, and how the content specifications can guide instruction. Part II focuses on the Math Item Specifications for the Smarter Balanced Assessment, as well as looking at the item types on the assessment. Part II also goes over how a closer look at the item specifications can guide instruction.

The archived webinars and all necessary documents are available online at

Be sure to watch the pre-webinar recording, and check out the post-webinar activity as well. The post-webinar activity allows educators to work with their newly acquired knowledge in either educator teams or individually. Directions for the activity can be accessed in the "Post-Webinar Activity PowerPoint" included on the webpage. The activity worksheets and answer sheets are also provided.

SDE-Boise State Writing Project Professional Development

In 2012, the Department partnered with the Boise State Writing Project to offer in-depth professional development on the English language arts and literacy standards. Those professional development opportunities were converted into a "Workshop-in-a-Box" consisting of several discrete but interlocking modules. These modules are designed so you can replicate these face-to-face workshops at the local level. The modules provide a coherent, detailed regimen of activities for use in districts that includes resources, goals, objectives, strategies, and detailed notes for trainers. They begin with activities and strategies for orientation to the Common Core and move through beginning stages of lesson and unit planning.
