Pursuant to Idaho Board Rule, IDAPA 08.02.02.016.01, in order to recertify, a select group of Idaho educators and administrators are required to take one of the three state approved mathematics instruction courses titled Mathematical Thinking for Instruction (MTI), prior to September 1, 2014. The following educators are required to successfully complete the course:
The State Department of Education pays for the delivery of the Mathematical Thinking for Instruction course out of the Math Initiative Budget. Credits for completing the MTI course are not paid for by the state. However, Idaho Code 33-1004A allows completion of the course to carry the same weight as three transcript credits for the purposes of recertification.
If you are an educator in need of a copy of your MTI completion form for verification purposes, please contact Nancy England at naengland@sde.idaho.gov.

The MTI follow-up opportunities are for teachers and administrators who have completed the Mathematical Thinking for Instruction (MTI) course; these opportunities will provide further development with the instructional strategies presented in the course. Opportunities will be offered in various formats including follow-up classes, topic-specific workshops, webinars, unit studies, and book studies.
The MTI Unit Study was created to provide an effective and scalable model of follow-up support to those individuals, schools, and districts requesting support following the MTI course. By utilizing the unit study model, which combines aspects of the research from Japanese lesson study, Professional Learning Communities and the Developing Mathematical Thinking project, a framework is provided from which educators can reflect and improve classroom math instruction. The goal of the unit study meeting is to lead district and school leadership teams through the unit study process and to train them on how to effectively lead unit studies within their own schools and districts. For more information and to register, please visit the following website:
Please contact your Regional Math Specialist below, if you are interested in conducting a unit study in your school/district.
