Report to the Legislature on the Idaho Math Initiative2012 MTI Webinars
The MTI webinars are designed to support school personnel in implementing the concepts and instructional strategies from the Mathematical Thinking for Instruction (MTI) course. In addition, the webinars focus on building familiarity and understanding of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) by examining strategies, models and contexts that support their implementation.
Based on feedback from the Spring 2012 webinars, we decided to make the Fall 2012 MTI webinars available solely as pre-recorded webinars or MathCasts1. In addition, we are planning on providing more information on integration into the classroom by linking the mathematical content to lesson ideas and assessment items around the MathCast topic. The general outline involves:
- Discussion regarding the research base for the particular mathematical topic with suggestions for further reading
- A focusing task designed to build participants mathematical knowledge for instruction around a particular topic
- Discussion around potential assessment items and classroom activities
- Share student work if it is available
Timeline
The goal is to have the first set of the fall 2012 MathCast's developed, recorded, and posted by September 30th, 2012 Fall 2012 MathCast Topics
- Developing Place Value Understanding (K-2nd)
- Developing Understanding of Fractions and Their Operations (3rd-5th)
- Understanding Rational (and a little bit of irrational) Number (6th-8th)
- Understanding and Applying Geometry (K-2nd)
- Understanding and Applying Geometry (3rd-5th)
- Understanding and Applying Geometry (6th-8th)
