Teacher of The Year

Idaho Teacher of The Year Program

The Idaho Teacher of the Year Program, which began in 1959, is one of the most prestigious honors in the state for teachers. The program focuses public attention on excellence in teaching that has a real impact on the students of Idaho.

The Idaho Teacher of the Year is chosen from among the districts' nominees by a selection committee representing the state education leaders and lawmakers. Each school district and charter school may nominate one teacher. School districts should submit the nominations to the State Department of Education before the end of the school year.

The Idaho Teacher of the Year also becomes a nominee for the National Teacher of the Year, a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers that is sponsored by Scholastic Inc.

2013 Idaho Teacher of the Year: Katie Pemberton

BiographyKatie Pemberton, 2013 Idaho Teacher of the Year

Katie Pemberton has been a math teacher for 7 years now. Throughout her career, Pemberton says she has focused on three main aspects:

  1. Providing excellent mathematics education to all students
  2. Collaborating with peers as a leader in technology
  3. Teaching/mentoring pre-service teachers as they enter the teaching profession

She never shies away from working with at-risk students or students who struggle. In fact, she embraces these challenges and is always looking for new, innovative strategies to help every child learn.

She applies for grants - lots of grants - to get more technology in her school and classroom.

She collaborates with other teachers in her school, her district and even those across the country - because Pemberton recognizes she cannot do it alone.

Since she first began teaching, she has stood out as an excellent educator. She has earned recognitions including District Teacher of the Year and last year was selected for the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Last year, the state invited her to present at the Annual Superintendents' Meeting to share her innovative ideas on integrating technology in the classroom.

Pemberton is known among her colleagues as a "stellar educator" who never settles for mediocrity. She has said: "Teachers prepare students of today to be the problem solvers and leaders of tomorrow."

That is exactly what she is accomplishing in her classroom each and every day. For these reasons, Katie Pemberton has been selected as Idaho's Teacher of the Year!

Congratulations!
