How to Enroll in one of Idaho's Driver Education Programs

  1. Decide if you want to enroll in a Public or Commercial (Private) Driving School Program. Public programs also have the ability to offer the classroom hours online through IDLA (Idaho Digital Learning Academy). For questions about online driver education you can contact your student’s public school counselor or call IDLA at (208) 342-0207.
  2. Contact your local high school to enroll in either a traditional or online program.
  3. All students, 14-1/2 – 21 years of age, living in a public school district that offers driver education are eligible to enroll, whether they attend that public school, charter school, private school, or are home schooled (ID Code 33-1703).
  4. Purchase a driver education permit. For a list of items required to get a permit, see
  5. The permit MUST be purchased before the student participates in any instruction (ID Code 49-307(3)).
  6. All students must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction or work time, 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction, and 6 hours of active back seat observation (ID Codes 33-1702(2)), 49-2102).
  7. Once Driver Education is completed, students under 17 must complete the supervised driving period of six months, accumulating at least 40 hours of daylight driving and 10 hours of night-time driving.
  8. After the supervising driving period is completed, students must take and pass a short written test at the local DMV and a skills test from a third party skills tester. See to locate and schedule a skills test from a skills tester near you.
