Initial Certificate/Credential for
Postsecondary Specialist

Application Guidelines

This application packet is intended for those individuals who hold a master's degree or higher in the content area being taught and are employed as a current faculty member from an accredited Idaho postsecondary institution. Separation from the employing university shall invalidate the certificate.

The primary use of this state-issued certificate shall be for distance education, "virtual classroom" programs, and for public and postsecondary partnerships.

This certificate is good for five (5) years and is renewable if the candidate is still employed as a college/university faculty member.

Please submit all applicable items in one complete packet. An application will not be evaluated until all materials have been received.

A Complete Packet Must Include The Following Items:

1) Completed and signed application (Form B1-A Application for an Alternative Authorization/Route to Certification/Endorsement)

2) Completed fingerprint card (required if not already on file, if the applicant has had a break in service or if the applicant is changing districts). A $40 processing fee must be included with the completed fingerprint card. The Idaho certificate/credential will not be issued until the results of the background investigation check are received from the BCI/FBI. Another background check is not required if the candidate has a valid background check on file with the SDE and is still employed in the same school district without a break in service.

Fingerprint cards are not available on the State Department of Education website. To obtain a fingerprint card please email Brenda Arnold at fingerprintrequest@sde.idaho.gov. Once you receive the fingerprint card, take it to your local police department or sheriff’s office and have your prints rolled on the card. Return the fingerprint card, fee, and forms with your Idaho teacher application packet.

3) Application fee - $75
Checks and money orders are to be made payable to the State Department of Education. Credit cards are not accepted. Payment is non-refundable. Cash in exact amount will be accepted for walk-ins.

$75 for the application fee
$40 for the fingerprinting/background investigation check

One check or money order for both fees is acceptable.

4) Official transcripts demonstrating completion of a master's degree program in the content area to be taught. Grade reports, faxed material, copies or other unofficial transcripts are not acceptable for certification. Official transcripts may be opened by the applicant as long as they are printed on the institution's original security paper and should be included in the application packet. Transcripts mailed directly to the Certification office will not be accepted. Placement files are not accepted.

5) University Recommendation from the accredited employing postsecondary institution signed by the faculty's college dean. The letter should indicate the candidate is employed as a current faculty member from an accredited Idaho postsecondary institution and the content area for which they are qualified to teach. Separation from the employing university shall invalidate the certificate.

Upon completion of the above-noted items and verification that all requirements for certification are met, the applicant qualifies for a standard Idaho certificate/credential issued for five (5) years.

IMPORTANT: To renew the certificate, the renewal application packet (Renewing an Idaho Certificate/Credential) must include a new recommendation from the postsecondary institution (faculty’s college dean official or higher).
